Our Sustainability Audit for Suppliers asks

Do you recycle waste material from the manufacturing process ?

The reason why we ask

Recycling material resulting from the manufacturing process reduces the amount of waste that must go for disposal.

Andrew Matthews of Parley Green has sent us an ingenious solution to paper offcasts  He explains "We actually use a paper offcast to wrap all of our coffins. We use a lot of this paper as part of a dye-sublimation printing process to cure inks and it generates a lot of waste from the backing of the material. We thought how we could use this and found it was big enough to wrap our coffins in. It would have otherwise gone to waste and is perfect for us. It also has a nice look to it and adds to the overall feel of our coffins. It keeps dust off and lets funeral directors recycle it easily. The alternative might have been bubble wrap which would have been expensive, made of plastic and hard for an FD to recycle considering how much we would use just to wrap a coffin in one layer.
Everyone who collects from us just has the coffins wrapped in paper. Brilliant, and they look great on the racking and in goods out. It really shows we are trying and this solution is the optimal choice for us now regardless of it actually being our own waste

We also built a wooden frame for the rolls so we can unravel as much as we need near a bench which makes using it easy. Luckily we have so much of it that it helped us to make a good decision and invest in the time it needed to get the wooden frame built".
