Platinum Standard for the Woodland Burial Company
The Woodland Burial Company, at Granville’s Wood in Derbyshire, has achieved the Platinum Award from the Greener Globe Funeral Standard, recognising its commitment to environmental sustainability in the funeral sector.
The accolade reflects the company’s dedication to restoring native woodland, and enhancing biodiversity. In the 1950's Granville's Wood had been planted with pine and larch for the telegraph pole market. This area was never harvested and wasn’t managed from circa 1990 until The Woodland Burial Company purchased its first area in 2017. The long-term plan is to fully restore the woodland to its natural state. Each time they remove a pine tree, to create a bench or bird box, they allow a little more light to creep through the canopy, encouraging the smaller oaks and other trees to thrive. By sustainable management the Woodland Burial Company supports new growth and the wildlife it encourages.
Their long-term stewardship plan ensures the site will be protected for 199 years, eventually transitioning to the Woodland Burial Trust to prevent future development.
Congratulations to Simon, Clare, and all the team. We look forward to working with you as you develop your other sustainable projects.
