Mushroom (Mycelium) Coffin

Mushroom (Mycelium) Coffin

In the final week before Christmas 2024 we had an invitation from Thomas Minton at Parley Green Coffins to have a look at a ‘Mushroom Coffin’! We have been following the manufacturers, Loop Biotech, for some time and as lovers of mushrooms, not only in the kitchen, but as an important part of many biosystems we decided to take look.

The ‘Loop Living Cocoon™’ , is said to be the world’s first living coffin which when buried will enrich nature by biodegrading in just 45 days and providing nutrients back to the ground. The Loop Living Cocoon™ is grown in just 7 days, using a strain of mycelium, which is common to both the Netherlands and the UK, along with upcycled hemp fibers.

The one we saw was an unfinished sample being sent to the FFMA for destructive testing, so it would not be fair judge its appearance. However, considering its made from mushrooms it felt extremely solid, yet warm to the touch.

The Mushroom coffin has been submitted to the FFMA Coffin accreditation scheme for testing. We look forward to hearing how this innovative product continues to develop, as it is through innovation that we will continue to make our sector more sustainable.
