Important environmental spaces

Cemeteries and burial grounds are important for the wide range of habitats they can provide to local wildlife. Making them species rich areas, especially within the urban environment. In addition, the planting and maintaining of trees, shrubs and grasses can make them important carbon sinks.

Proudly demonstrate you are part of the solution

Over 70% of councils have declared a climate emergency and many private companies are recognising the need to become more sustainable. Cemetery and burial ground managers recognise the importance of their role to support the environment. When you adopt a Trusted Cemetery and Burial Ground Environmental Policy and complete our Sustainability Audit Questionnaire, it will demonstrate to your communities that the culture of your organisation is aligned with theirs.

Award levels

We recognise that there are many different forms of cemetery and burial ground. These range from large traditional cemeteries with facilities, for example offices, chapel, toilets, catering etc, to natural burial grounds whose impact on the environment is restricted to grave digging, grounds maintenance and memorialisation. To meet the needs of both groups we have developed two distinct audits reflecting the range of services provided. The Burial Ground Audit covers the core areas of service delivery, this is ideal for natural burial grounds and the smaller cemeteries operated by Town Councils, whilst the Cemetery Audit covers the wider range of areas relating to larger organisations.
